The Air Force weather team that keeps canceling your rocket launches - The Verge

Image
With less than 20 minutes to go before SpaceX’s first crewed flight, weather conditions remained miserable, forcing meteorologists at the Air Force’s 45th Weather Squadron to deliver bad news to NASA and SpaceX. “It definitely hurts, especially when we have those hard requirements that when something hits, there’s nothing we can do about it,” Capt. Jason Fontenot, the space lift weather operations flight commander at the 45th Weather Squadron, said during a press call. “And we just kind of have to pass on the information, saying, ‘Even though we’re not at the launch window yet, this is very unlikely that we will see this take off today.’” Military personnel who work at the Squadron in Cape Canaveral, Florida are used to being the ones to call off the show. Fontenot and his team at Patrick Air Force Base are responsible for monitoring the weather surrounding all of the launches out of the Cape, which is home to the busiest spaceport in the United States. “It definitely hurts, especia

Rockets could get boost from NBA's break - Houston Chronicle

The Rockets never thought of themselves as a sixth-seed sort of team. Though that worked out for them 25 years ago, when the reigning champion Rockets became the only sixth seed to win a championship, the 2019-20 Rockets considered their place in the standings when the season was halted in March to be an anomaly. Amid an increasing expectation that the season will resume in late July, with the plans for schedules and playoff formats likely to be formalized with a Board of Governors vote on Thursday, the Rockets have come to think the layoff and restart might be good for their expectation to be better than a team in the lower portion of the playoff bracket. As much as any potential benefit from the circumstances can never come close to the horrible cost of the coronavirus crises that so disrupted the season, the Rockets believe when they get to Disney’s little Hooptown outside of Orlando for training camp 2.0 and the restart of the season, circumstances might bring a return to conten

Former Rockets guard Pat Beverley calls out NBA over lack of clarity - Space City Scoop

It’s been a rather unusual time in the sports world, as most of the sports leagues have been shut down. It’s been especially interesting on the NBA front, as we’ve heard that the league could potentially return to action in August, which is painful to hear. Although the extended absence has been frustrating for the fans, the Houston Rockets have turned the hiatus into a positive, as they’ve been planning for potential offseason moves during this time. We’ve heard all types of reports regarding the league’s attempts to return to the court, ranging from a World Cup style playoff format, to even a top-16 selection style, regardless of conference. But although we’re hearing these reports from league insiders, the players aren’t exactly getting

Warriors Playoff Rewind: Rockets miss 27 straight 3-pointers during Game 7 vs. Warriors in 2018 - Warriors Wire

League practice facilities are prepping plans to reopen their doors for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic put a halt to game-action. Yet, the Golden State Warriors season still is likely over. The Warriors league-worst 15-50 record has already eliminated them from the playoff picture with 17 games remaining on the slate. With Golden State’s playoff hopes already sealed, Warriors Wire is digging back through Golden State’s archive of postseason moments. Warriors Wire has highlighted standout performances and matchups worthy of a rewatch. However, today’s edition of Warriors Playoff Rewind is highlighted for a different reason. May 28, 2018 As the Golden State Warriors punched a ticket for their fourth consecutive NBA Finals appearance, Kevin Durant led all scorers with 34 points on 11-of-21 shooting from the field. The back-to-back Finals MVP added five rebounds, five assists and three blocks. Stephen Curry followed his teammate with 27 points on 7-of-15 from 3-point ran

Clyde Drexler on facing Michael Jordan: 'This is a team game' - Rockets Wire

Image
Though ESPN’s “The Last Dance” played up the early 1990s rivalry between guards Michael Jordan and Clyde Drexler, the former Houston Rockets and Portland Trail Blazers star isn’t interested in that angle. In showing highlights of the 1992 NBA Finals matchup between Jordan’s Chicago Bulls and Drexler’s Trail Blazers, Jordan said on the film that he was “offended” by pre-series comparisons to Drexler. “I’m not saying [Clyde] wasn’t a threat,” Jordan said on the documentary. “But me being compared to him, I took offense to that.” Jordan went on to average 35.8 points per game on 52.6% shooting in the best-of-seven series, which his Bulls won in six games. Since then, in an appearance this week with Rockets flagship radio station SportsTalk 790, Drexler shared his side of the story: This is a team game, it’s not one guy. You can have 50 points and 40 rebounds, but if you lose, are you less of a player than anybody on the other team? No, it’s a team game. So I hate when people act lik

Clyde Drexler lays out formula of how Rockets can win title - Space City Scoop

Clyde Drexler (Photo by Ronald Martinez/BIG3/Getty Images) Former Houston Rockets star Clyde Drexler shares his opinion of what it’ll take for the Rockets to win the championship this season. When the Houston Rockets acquired Russell Westbrook in the offseason, there were questions regarding how he would fit on the team. Many didn’t see Westbrook thriving in a 3-point heavy offense like the one the Rockets utilize, as that’s simply not his strength. Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni tweaked his offense, and Westbrook ultimately turned in a career year during the 2019-20 season. Russ made a career-best 47.4 percent of his shots and was riding a streak of 34 consecutive games of scoring at least 20 points, which was also a career-best. Despite Westbrook’s dominance, James Harden led the league in scoring yet again, as The Beard averaged 34.4 points per game while posting identical efficiency as his unguardable season of 2018-19, as he had a true shooting percentage of 61.6 percent in b
