Ranking NBA coaching vacancies: Rockets, 76ers have the most talent, but could be the least desirable jobs - CBS Sports

Image
The NBA bubble has been great theatre for a sports-starved fanbase, and the basketball has been tremendous. We've got a terrific, if unlikely, Finals matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Miami Heat, the latter of which is the first No. 5 seed in NBA history to win a conference title.  You can see our expert picks for that series here. But the bubble did not go so well for a handful of other teams. The Clippers, Rockets and 76ers were all major disappointments in the playoffs, and as such, each of those teams subsequently parted ways with its coach. Doc Rivers is out with the Clippers. Brett Brown is done in Philly, as is Mike D'Antoni in Houston. In addition, the Pelicans cut ties with Alvin Gentry, Billy Donovan bounced from Oklahoma City and Nate McMillan was fired in Indiana.  Jacque Vaughn also lost his interim coaching gig with the Nets, who have since hired Steve Nash to take over. The Chicago Bulls job was also open, but it has since been filled by Dono

Report: Rockets Interested in Doc Rivers After Clippers Departure - Sports Illustrated

Image
The Rockets are planning to interview a deep pool of candidates for their head coaching vacancy, and another high-profile name could be added to the list. Houston is reportedly interested in interviewing former Clippers head coach Doc Rivers, according to the Houston Chronicle’s Jonathan Feigen. And it’s not hard to see why. Rivers is one of the NBA’s most accomplished coaches, amassing 943 regular-season wins and 16 playoff appearances in 21 seasons as a head coach. Rivers led the Celtics to the Finals in 2008 and 2010. He brought the Clippers to championship contention immediately upon his arrival in Los Angeles. Perhaps Rivers could be the final piece to take the Rockets over the top in the ninth year of the James Harden era. Rivers is far from the only candidate as Houston searches for a new head coach. The Rockets are reportedly set to begin interviewing candidates on Wednesday or Thursday, with Tyronn Lue, Jeff Van Gundy, Kenny Atkinson and Sam Cassell noted as potential candi

Looking back at when Jimmy Butler spurned the Rockets’ hot pursuit - Space City Scoop

Image
In the free agency period of 2019, the Houston Rockets were willing to make all moves necessary to acquire Jimmy Butler, but the All-Star turned them away. While the Houston Rockets mull over what they can possibly do to improve next season, the one that got away is now on his way to the NBA Finals. When Jimmy Butler hit the open market last summer, he was one of the most coveted free agents in the league. While several teams believed they had a chance at the star, the Rockets were one of few teams willing to give him everything he wanted. Despite All-Star seasons in Chicago and Minnesota, Butler never had the proper supporting cast to get far in the playoffs, eventually leading him to the Philadelphia 76ers. In his one season alongside Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, Butler was within a Kawhi Leonard miracle shot of making the Eastern Conference Finals. Despite having success with the Sixers, Butler appeared ready to move on after the last-second heartbreaker. As ESPN reporter and Roc

NBA Trade Rumors: Rockets interested in trading for Pacers' Myles Turner - NBA Analysis Network

Image
Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports The Indiana Pacers are going to be a team to keep a close eye on this offseason. It sounds like both Victor Oladipo and Myles Turner could be on the trade block. In addition to that report, the Houston Rockets may come calling for Turner. According to a report from Ross of Legion Hoops, the Rockets are one of the many teams interested in acquiring Turner from the Pacers. Houston would make a ton of sense as a potential landing spot for Turner. They need rim protection, but they will not want a big who can’t space the floor. Thankfully, Turner checks both of those boxes. During the 2019-20 NBA season with the Pacers, Turner ended up averaging 12.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game. He shot 45.7 percent from the floor overall and knocked down 34.4 percent of his three-point attempts. Those numbers would look good for the Rockets. Rumors have been swirling surrounding the Rockets that they could break up their core. Russell Westbrook

Darius Miles offers advice for Rockets’ James Harden - Space City Scoop

Image
Longtime NBA veteran Darius Miles offered advice for Houston Rockets star James Harden, as it pertains to how he can continue to hone his craft. James Harden has been one of the best players in the NBA since his arrival to the Houston Rockets in 2012. Harden has been an MVP finalist on numerous occasions and has led the Rockets to the postseason in each of his eight seasons in the Space City. Harden has pulled off a wide array of feats and accomplishments, as he’s led the league in assists and 3-pointers made. In addition, Harden has averaged at least 30 points in each of the last three seasons. Harden has led the league in scoring between 2017-20, and has thrived in spite of having different running mates. Harden led the league in scoring during Chris Paul and Russell Westbrook’s initial debuts, which is impressive considering how he didn’t have time to adapt and adjust to playing alongside either player in Houston. Harden has added a wrinkle to his game during each offseason, as

Report: Jeff Van Gundy 'In the Mix' for Rockets Coaching Vacancy - Sports Illustrated

Image
The Rockets have cast a wide net in their coaching search as they look for a replacement for Mike D'Antoni, but it appears as though a pair of candidates are leading the pack as October approaches.  Former Houston guard Sam Cassell has been reported as a top candidate for the Rockets' vacancy. Not only does Cassell have Houston ties, he also enters the 2020 offseason after six years as an assistant with the Clippers. Cassell has been a fixture in the league for nearly three decades. His first head coaching gig should come sooner than later. Another former member of the Rockets' organization is also reportedly under consideration to replace D'Antoni. Current ESPN analyst and ex-Houston head coach Jeff Van Gundy is "in the mix," for the Rockets' vacancy, potentially bringing a far different style than his predecessor, per ESPN's Brian Windhorst. "Keep an eye on former Rocket, a guy who won a championship here, Sam Cassell," Windhorst said o

How the Lakers exposed the NBA’s anti-bias against Rockets - Space City Scoop

The Los Angeles Lakers’ latest move has provided further proof of how the NBA has a bias against the Houston Rockets. The 2020 NBA playoffs were a disappointing one for the Houston Rockets, as the Los Angeles Lakers displayed that they weren’t legitimate contenders. The Lakers disposed of the Rockets within five games, and exposed the Rockets’ famed small ball approach. But the Lakers have exposed several other things, starting with the double standard about how James Harden’s displeasure about getting snubbed for the MVP is proof that he doesn’t care about winning a title. Lakers forward LeBron James made identical comments about the 2019-20 MVP result, and didn’t face any criticism. The Lakers’ latest move should provide further exoneration for the Rockets in the court of public opinion. With frustration regarding LeBron James not getting a favorable whistle from the referees, the Lakers went knocking at NBA commissioner Adam Silver’s door, to present their case and inquire about

Woj: Rockets looking for right mix of head coach, top assistant - Rockets Wire

Image
The Houston Rockets are in the middle of a comprehensive search for their next head coach to replace Mike D’Antoni, and one of the key criteria could be compatibility with top assistant candidates. Here’s what ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski told the network’s “Keyshawn, Jay and Zubin”  radio program on Wednesday: Houston, I think you’re going to see more of a veteran coach there for that group. I think they’ll interview a lot of people. Ty Lue and Sam Cassell with the Clippers are a couple, but a bunch more. They like interviewing a lot of people with the Rockets, traditionally, when they have an opening — and trying a lot of combinations of head coach and top assistant. They try to find people that complement each other. [embedded content] For the first three seasons of D’Antoni’s four-year tenure from 2016 through 2020, he worked closely with assistant coach Jeff Bzdelik — who was very well regarded for his defensive background. Rockets fans roast Giannis for sharing his video edit with Olajuwon - Rockets Wire

Image
With his recent MVP win for the 2019-20 season, Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo joined NBA legends Hakeem Olajuwon and Michael Jordan as the only players in league history to win the awards for MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. “Just being in that conversation and in the same sentence as them, it means a lot to me,” Antetokounmpo said after the announcement. At the moment, though, there is one obvious outlier among that trio. Jordan and Olajuwon combined for eight NBA titles in the 1990s, whereas the “Greek Freak” is still looking for his first after another early exit from the playoffs. When Olajuwon won MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in the 1993-94 season, he capped it with the first championship of his career and in the entire history of the Houston Rockets. So when Antetokounmpo posted an edited video to his Twitter account on Wednesday of his own highlights mixed with Jordan and Olajuwon, many users felt compelled to note the clear diffe

Houston Rockets: We can’t forget to appreciate James Harden - Hoops Habit

Image
Houston Rockets, James Harden (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images) The Houston Rockets were knocked out of the playoffs yet again this year, however, James Harden deserves our utmost respect and appreciation. Now that the Los Angeles Lakers vs Denver Nuggets series is underway, let’s get down to the real business. Houston Rockets star James Harden should be appreciated. Although the Rockets lost 4-1 in five games to the LeBron James-led Los Angeles Lakers and the combination that is James and Anthony Davis. Although they almost lost to his former teammate Chris Paul and the OKC Thunder, his former team. James Harden deserves our appreciation. After being dragged to a Game 7 by the Thunder, his former team, and knocked out of the Conference Finals by the Lakers, the Houston Rockets have got to be tired. The Rockets have not given Harden the superstar treatment yet, and they have not yet won a championship in the Harden era. The goal for the Rockets seems to be to win a champio

The 3-team trade that would give the Rockets Kevin Love - ClutchPoints

Image
The Houston Rockets mortgaged most of their future in a trade to acquire Russell Westbrook last offseason, and then they traded away Clint Capela to solidify their new commitment to small-ball. After a disappointing playoff run and the departure of coach Mike D’Antoni, the Rockets may want to make a drastic move, such as trying to acquire Kevin Love. On the daily Locked On Rockets Podcast, host Jackson Gatlin discussed a 3-team trade scenario that would bring Love to Houston. Jackson Gatlin : This seems to happen every summer with the Houston Rockets. Fans want to try and pair James Harden with Kevin Love, the former Minnesota big man, the guy who was the third point in the triangle between LeBron James and Kyrie Irving during that Cleveland championship. Here’s the trade proposal for the Rockets to receive Kevin Love. It’s a three team trade proposal: Rockets receive Kevin Love, the Timberwolves receive Eric Gordon and Danuel House Jr., and the Cavaliers receive James Johnson, a

Ty Lue is reportedly a 'serious candidate' for Rockets head coach - Rockets Wire

Image
Tyronn Lue is a “serious candidate” for the vacant position of head coach with the Houston Rockets, reports Kelly Iko of The Athletic . Lue just finished his first season as a Los Angeles Clippers assistant, and he previously worked as head coach of the Cavaliers over parts of four seasons. Now 43 years old, Lue led Cleveland to its only NBA title in 2016. During an 11-year career as a player, Lue briefly played for Houston in the 2004-05 season. A point guard known for pesky defense, Lue averaged 6.0 points and 2.8 assists in 22.8 minutes per game with the Rockets. In a mailbag story posted Monday, Iko was asked if Lue is a serious candidate for Houston’s current job, as well as whether Lue’s NBA coaching experience was sufficient. Here’s a sampling of Iko’s answer: Lue is a serious candidate. I disagree with the notion that his sample size is hard to gauge. Remember it was Lue who took over the job from David Blatt midway through the 2016 season and led the Cavaliers to the pro

RAAF launches first space payload on DART rocket - Airforce Technology

Image
The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) has launched a DART rocket with a first space payload from Koonibba Rocket Range in South Australia. This marks the launch of the first commercial rocket to space from Australia. The DART is 3.4m-long and weighs 34kg. It is said to be a fraction of the size of Nasa and SpaceX rockets. The Government of Australia has planned to invest A$7bn over the next ten years to boost space capabilities as part of the 2020 Defence Strategic Update and Force Structure Plan. Australia Defence Minister Linda Reynolds said: “The rocket will carry a prototype radio frequency receiver unit designed for airforce. “The payload, carried on a DART rocket, provides a stepping stone for airforce to explore how advanced rapidly deployable networked sensors can be employed to provide information across defence networks. “Airforce’s Plan Jericho has sponsored this prototype, developed by DEWC Systems, and marks an exciting future for Australia’s space capability.” Aust

4 Players the Houston Rockets should target in free agency - Space City Scoop

Houston Rockets Daryl Morey (Photo by Bob Levey/Getty Images) The Houston Rockets are up against the cap and in desperate need of reinforcements. These are four players they need to target in free agency. The Houston Rockets are in a salary cap pickle. The salary cap, per Adrian Wojnarowski, is projected to be at $115 million for the 2020-21 season. Barring any trades to shed salary, the Rockets already have $128,310,164 in salary commitments for the upcoming season. They will see that number rise if Austin Rivers exercises his $2.369 million player option. The number that’s most important to the Rockets is the luxury tax threshold. Projected to be at $139 million, a figure that the Rockets are currently beneath, they need to desperately stay under that threshold if they want to add any free agents. Per NBA rules, staying beneath the luxury tax increases the amount a team can offer free agents through their mid-level exception. The Rockets have two All-Stars on the back half of

Corey Brewer says Rockets deserve blame for Mike D’Antoni exit - Space City Scoop

Image
Former Houston Rockets forward Corey Brewer believes the Rockets have themselves to blame for Mike D’Antoni no longer being at the helm as the head coach. The Houston Rockets‘ 2019-20 season was prematurely ended last Saturday, as the Rockets were eliminated by the Los Angeles Lakers during the Western Conference Semifinals. The Rockets stole the first game of the series but lost the next four games, as the Lakers advanced to face the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals. The Rockets got news the following morning on the flight back from Orlando to Houston that lame duck coach Mike D’Antoni would be parting ways with the franchise, as both sides weren’t able to come to terms on an extension. There was word that Rockets general manager Daryl Morey was upset upon finding out the news that D’Antoni would be pursuing free agency, as the two had reportedly met following the Rockets’ Game 5 loss. As Kelly Iko of The Athletic reported, D’Antoni was expecting a call from Rockets

Here's the latest inside information on the Rockets coaching search - SportsMap Houston

The Astros had two losses over the last 24 hours; one a game against the Diamondbacks in the series opener on Friday night, the other the news that their recovering ace, Justin Verlander, announced Saturday afternoon that he is opting to undergo Tommy John surgery. The decision and surgery will likely sideline Verlander through 2021 when his current contract with Houston ends. With that, the Astros headwinds continued to increase, meaning a win to even the series with Arizona on Saturday would be a much-needed pick-me-up. Here's how they did: Final Score: Astros 3, Diamondbacks 2. Record: 26-26, second in the AL West. Winning pitcher: Enoli Paredes (3-2, 2.84 ERA). Losing pitcher: Luke Weaver (1-8, 6.51 ERA). D-backs score two on Javier who is pulled early Kole Calhoun, who drove in four runs, including a home run in Friday's game, would start the scoring on Saturday with a solo home run off of Cristian Javier in the top of the second, giving Arizona an early 1-0 l

Report: Rockets Eye ‘Culture Reset’ After Mike D’Antoni Exit - Sports Illustrated

Rrrrip 3 hrs It will take more than a culture reset. The top NBA teams are all highly competitive. The Rockets must do something that differentiates them - this won't be achieved through personnel, coaches, management or ownership. Look at the record. What could a new Rockets coach accomplish with nine points more a game and consistency that would: Almost eliminate streaks/runs Put the Rockets in position to control and dictate the style of play throughout the game Work with the current roster This would require buy-in and commitment from coaches, players, management and owner. It would cost appreciable money but it would not be against the cap. This would be a tweak not a blowup. The players and coaches would be working with performance information (know your numbers) that no one has had previously. This can be achieved through using applied technology during training and analysis of game performance. Imagine the Rockets team with no 0 for 7’s on 3-pointers, no scor

Mike D'Antoni stepped down as Rockets coach during flight back to Houston from NBA bubble, per report - CBS Sports

Image
Darren Yamashita (USA Today) Shortly after being ousted in the Western Conference semifinals by the Lakers, it was announced that Houston Rockets head coach Mike D'Antoni wouldn't be returning next season. While the writing was on the wall throughout the season, considering he and the franchise failed to come to an agreement on an extension in May of 2019, and the constant reports of this season being a championship-or-bust for D'Antoni, it was a little surprising to find out that it wasn't the Rockets who decided he wouldn't be returning, but the coach himself. On Sunday, just a day after losing in Game 5 against the Lakers, D'Antoni informed the team that he wouldn't seek a new contract, and would rather test the open market that, with four possible coaching vacancies (not including the Rockets). A decision this big, would seem like it would take at least a few days to mull over, especially after Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said that re-sign

We already knew Rocket League was going free-to-play this summer, and today, the game’s developer, Psyonix, announced that the vehicular soccer game will go free-to-play on September 23rd. The transition to free-to-play also marks the debut of the game arriving on the Epic Games Store, a digital storefront owned by Psyonix’s parent company, Epic Games, which acquired the studio last year. After September 23rd, the game will be delisted from Steam; however, the studio explains that, regardless of which PC version you own, both versions will still receive “full support for future updates and features,” such as cross-platform play. Daryl Morey's GM job is safe, per Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta: 'He's going to pick the right head coach' - CBS Sports

Image
The Houston Rockets parted ways with head coach Mike D'Antoni following the conclusion of the team's 2019-20 campaign, but it appears the changes will end there. Despite some speculation that the Rockets could also look to make some changes in the front office, that won't be the case, according to Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta. He made it clear that Daryl Morey's job as general manager isn't in jeopardy. In fact, his role will be more important than ever as he'll be tasked with identifying a successor for D'Antoni.  "Daryl Morey's job is safe," Fertitta said on Tuesday, via the Houston Chronicle. "I'm sure he's going to pick the right head coach."   Tilman acknowledged that his own basketball knowledge is limited, but he's confident that he has the right people in place to make smart decisions for the franchise he owns.  "It begins and ends with the general manager," Fertitta said. Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta says GM Daryl Morey's job is safe - ESPN

Image
3:42 PM ET Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta has declared his intention to rely on Daryl Morey to lead the franchise's coaching search, squashing speculation that Fertitta would also seek to make a change at general manager. "Daryl Morey's job is safe, and I'm sure he's going to pick the right head coach," Fertitta said Tuesday during his weekly appearance on CNBC. The Rockets, who were eliminated by the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference semifinals, are searching for a new head coach after Mike D'Antoni informed the franchise on Sunday that he did not intend to return. D'Antoni's contract expired at the end of the season after extension discussions broke down last summer. 2 Related There had been leaguewide speculation about Morey's job security since his tweet supporting protesters in Hong Kong in October damaged the NBA's and Rockets' business relationships with China, costing Fertitta millions of dollars in sp
