After a year away due to COVID-19, summer league basketball returns to Hudson County - nj.com

Image
The familiar sights and sounds of spectators around the gates and basketballs pounding off the outdoor tiles have returned to Hamilton Park in Jersey City. After a year away due to the COVID-19 pandemic, high school summer basketball leagues have returned across the state. As the country continues to re-open amid dropping positive test results, the return of this summertime staple to Hudson County has been much appreciated for players and spectators alike. "Everybody looks forward to this — the teams and especially the community," said Pat Devaney Sr., who runs the Hamilton Park Summer League, which is now in its 18th season. "The community loves this. They all come up to us and say 'Thank god you're back and things are coming back to normal. We love it when you guys are here.' They just put a new court down. This park is gorgeous and the people here open up their arms to us." "It feels great to get back to things returning to a litt

Michigan men’s basketball’s opponent set for 2021 Gavitt Games series - Maize n Brew

Image
The Michigan Wolverines have a loaded non-conference schedule this upcoming season and have added another quality opponent to the slate. According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, the Wolverines will take on Seton Hall in the annual Gavitt Games series that pits the Big Ten and Big East conferences. Andrew Kahn of MLive confirmed the game between the two teams and said that the take is set for Nov. 16. Seton Hall went 14-13 last year and missed the NCAA Tournament after four straight trips prior to that. Seton Hall is notable, of course, for being the team that Michigan defeated in the 1989 national title game. The Wolverines would play the Pirates seven months later and win the rematch. This season's showdown will be the third time that the two programs meet and the first time somewhere other than a neutral court. The finishing touches are still being put on the rest of the non-conference schedule, but there are plenty of quality opponents that will test the Wolverines befo

The Warriors were No. 2 in both polls behind top-ranked IMG Academy. Mark Freeman's team went 14-0 last fall, outscoring opponents 604-222. The Warriors defeated Auburn 29-28 in the state championship game. Quarterback Conner Harrell was named the Class 7A Back of the Year by the Alabama Sports Writers Association, while DL/LB Jeremiah Alexander was named Lineman of the Year. It was Thompson's second straight state title. Westlake (Austin, Texas), Grayson (Ga.) and Archbishop Hoban (Ohio) rounded out the top five in the final HSFA poll. Gonzaga men's basketball coach Mark Few to speak in front of Congress on NIL Rights - KREM.com

On Wednesday, Few will be a witness in a United States Senate hearing on athletes making money off of their Name, Image and Likeness rights in college athletics. WASHINGTON D.C., DC — This Wednesday, Gonzaga men's basketball head coach Mark Few will be a witness in a United States Senate hearing on Name, Image and Likeness rights in college athletics. The hearing, which is called NCAA Athletic NIL Rights, will address federal legislative proposals that would allow college athletes to monetize off their popularity. Few will speak in front of Congress members and field questions on the subject. This has been a hot topic for years as many have seen the need for reform when it comes to athletes making money off their name, image and likeness. This is what's currently happening. Several states are making their own NIL laws, in which they're allowing athletes to make money. A lot of that legislation would go into effect on July 1 of this year.

Gus Malzahn and UCF optimistic about possible 12-team College Football Playoff field - ESPN

Image
8:00 AM ET A "re-energized" Gus Malzahn already felt like he was taking over UCF's football program at the perfect time, and then the news dropped last week that the College Football Playoff was likely expanding from four to 12 teams. "This expansion benefits us as much as anybody in college football," Malzahn told ESPN. "It's a game-changer, no doubt. Strategically, when I first got the job, it was, 'How do we get into the playoff with just four teams?' Well, we just felt like we had to schedule a top-10 team, which is hard for us, and then you've got to beat them and run the table in your conference. "Realistically, how often is all of that going to line up? But now, with 12 teams, that all changes. We'll have a real shot every year to get in." The new proposal calls for the playoff bracket to include the six highest-ranked conference champions, plus the six highest-ranked other teams as determined by the CFP's

Cowboys controversial draft pick proving doubters wrong - The Landry Hat

Image
Everyone loves a good underdog story, and that includes the Dallas Cowboys The 2021 NFL Draft was an important one for the Dallas Cowboys. They headed into the draft with ten draft picks (would later become 11) after one of the more disappointing seasons in recent history. While most of the attention was surrounding the team's first-round pick, the third-round garnered its fair share since Dallas had three selections. The most controversial of the three was the 99th overall pick, Nahshon Wright. Many (including myself) considered that to be the team's worst selection in the draft by a long shot. That's because Wright projected to be a late-round pick or possibly an undrafted free agent. NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein was one of the many with that projection. Cornerback was a glaring need for the team, so drafting one was not the issue. The unbelievably long reach and the available prospects on the board are what make the selection a head-scratcher. Aggie men's basketball schedule still in works | USU Sports | hjnews.com - The Herald Journal

Image
Nothing is official and won't be for at least a month or perhaps a little longer. However, several national sources have been announcing some games Utah State will be a part of in the upcoming men's basketball season. The Aggies have announced they will be playing in a tournament in Conway, South Carolina, and there are four dates on the USU website under the 2021-22 schedule. The Mountain West Conference will announce the league schedule in the near future, according to a spokesman in the USU athletics department. Advertisement USU has struggled to find opponents, especially ones that are willing to come play in Logan. Having reached the Mountain West Tournament championship game three straight years, as well as making the NCAA Tournament three straight seasons, plus the reputation of fans at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum has made it a challenge. First-year Aggie head coach Ryan Odom and his staff are working with players right now in the practice gym, plus

Cities stripped of minor league baseball teams finding ways forward - Houston Chronicle

Image
Bert Parsley's vision was bold and unusual — a 35,000 square-foot restaurant and event area adjoining a Harley Davidson dealership. The space would only work in the right location, and the one he found on Port Charlotte's El Jobean Road seemed perfect. "We're right in front of Charlotte County Sports Complex," the Twisted Fork restaurant owner recalled thinking. "How could this go wrong?" Before the eatery even opened, the minor league team that called the stadium home was gone. When Major League Baseball stripped 40 teams of their affiliation in a drastic shakeup of the minor leagues this winter, most were compensated with an alternative high-level club, such as a college summer league team. Port Charlotte, Fla., was among a handful of exceptions. The Charlotte Stone Crabs — formerly a Class A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays — were forced to close entirely, and there's no plan to replace them. Their departure has left businesses, nonprofits,

Former Duke star Jalen Johnson can benefit most from great showing at NBA Combine - 247Sports

Image
Later this week, NBA Draft hopefuls will gather in Chicago for the 2021 NBA Combine. One of the players who needs to have a good showing is former Duke Blue Devil Jalen Johnson. Johnson was a five-star recruit in Duke's 2020 signing class, but he only played in 13 games last season before leaving the team. Because of that, CBS Sports college basketball analyst Gary Parrish believes Johnson has to prove himself at the combine. If Johnson can win over scouts in Chicago, he could cement himself as a first-round pick later this year. "Jalen Johnson was a projected lottery pick coming out of high school, and he might still get picked within that range in the 2021 NBA Draft," Parrish writes. "We'll find out July 29. But there is no getting around the fact that he quit his team at Duke the moment his minutes were slashed after consecutive subpar performances, and that has to be a possible point of concern for front offices trying to decide which player is worth thei

Dug McDaniel Commits to Michigan - Wolverine Maven

Image
It was pretty late on the east coast, but that didn't stop Fairfax (Va.) Paul VI Catholic point guard Dug McDaniel from pulling the trigger and committing to Michigan. Breakdown At 5-9, 145 pounds, McDaniel is obviously undersized, but from a make up standpoint, he's the exact kind of small point guard you want — he's feisty, tough, confident and fearless. He's also pretty damn good from a skill standpoint. He's extremely quick and fast, he shoots it well from the outside, he's crafty and finishes well at the rim despite his size and he's very bouncy (he can dunk with ease at 5-9). He's really good in all of those areas, but his best skill is passing the ball. He always has his eyes up, he sees plays before they happen and he has a knack for putting the ball exactly where it needs to be, and he's going to do it with some flair. Michigan has had a successful run with smallish point guards dating all the way back to Trey Burke (6-0, 185).

Former IU basketball assistant Mike Roberts: “Let's call it what it was — disappointing” - The Daily Hoosier

Image
Mike Roberts grew up in Terre Haute, Ind. before moving out to Oregon for high school when his father took a job on the West Coast. But eventually, after a brief stop in New Hampshire, Roberts found his way back in Indiana when he started his college basketball career at IU. And so began a series of circular moves that likely has Roberts' head spinning at this point. He went to work at Texas Tech as a graduate assistant under Bob Knight in 2005 before heading back out west to California, before heading back to Texas to serve as an assistant at Rice. Roberts then went to North Carolina Greensboro, where he reunited with former prep school teammate Wes Miller, before coming back to IU to serve as an assistant.  Now Roberts is back with Wes Miller at Cincinnati as an assistant coach. While the patterns are interesting, the twists and turns are fairly common in the college coaching profession.  Of course Roberts' most recent move to Cincinnati came as a result of I

In Pastner’s sixth season, tides shifting in Georgia Tech’s recruiting - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Image
"I think we'll be more selective in recruiting because you have two areas to recruit from, both high school and the transfer portal," he told the AJC. "It's almost like two recruiting seasons. We've always been really hard with our evaluations and we will continue to be hard in our evaluations moving forward." The primary reason is the heightened role that transfers have taken in the role of talent acquisition. With the transfer portal simplifying the process and with the elimination of the requirement for transfers to sit out one year at their new school, the number of transfers has skyrocketed. As of Tuesday afternoon, there were nearly 1,700 Division I players who had transferred this offseason – 4.9 per team – according to the website Verbal Commits. According to an NCAA report, the high in any of the four previous offseasons – and likely any season before that – was 704. The portal now presents coaches with a deep supply of players who have alre

"I haven't had any disappointments": Michael Jordan genuinely loves how his 15 seasons with the Bulls and the... - The Sportsrush

Image
Bulls legend Michael Jordan had such a flawless 15-year NBA career that the GOAT couldn't even name his biggest disappointment in basketball. Michael Jeffrey Jordan is one of the all-time greats to grace the basketball court. The Chicago Bulls superstar is considered to be the basketball god and looking at the illustrious resume he built up in the 1,072 games he played over 15 years, it's difficult to disagree with that fact. Because of the greatness of His Airness, alongside Hall-Of-Famers Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman, the Bulls franchise is one of the best dynasties in NBA history. Chicago was clearly the most dominant team of the 1990s, winning 6 championships in 8 seasons, and also finishing a regular season with the then-league best 72-10 record.
