Austin Rivers speaks out on love for Rockets, but doesn’t commit to return - ClutchPoints

Image
As part of a recent podcast appearance with The Ringer, Houston Rockets guard Austin Rivers detailed his affinity for the city of Houston. However, the former No. 10 overall pick also noted his interest in hitting the open market. Rivers, now 28 years of age, signed a two-year deal last offseason, and he has a $2.4 million player option for this upcoming season. During his podcast appearance, he explained why he is planning to opt out and become a free agent: “I definitely want to be out there on the market, and just see what else is out there,” Rivers said, via SB Nation’s The Dream Shake. “But I love Houston. Houston’s still one of my main options. That’s a team I loved playing for. But there’s other teams out there that you want to look at. You owe it to yourself to at least see the best situation.” By his own words, it seems as though Rivers would still be open to the idea of playing for the Rockets. However, he is clearly interested in hitting the open market. If he doe

James Harden's Rockets will reinvent themselves yet again, as coach Stephen Silas preaches unpredictability - CBS Sports

USATSI The Houston Rockets are not the darlings of the NBA. They are not on an upward trajectory. They ended the 2019-20 season in shambles, with four straight losses to the eventual champions, the last of which was a complete clunker, presaging the departures of general manager Daryl Morey and coach Mike D'Antoni, who have left behind a roster that is expensive, bereft of young talent, devoid of draft picks and built to play a specific style. Before the Rockets were even eliminated, The Athletic's John Hollinger wondered how long it would be before they'd face the music and move James Harden. When it becomes too difficult to add reinforcements to the team you've built, the most prudent thing to do is dismantle it. At 31 years old, Harden's trade value might never be higher than it is right now. Houston is not there yet. Shortly after Morey left, owner Tilman Fertitta said there's no reason to blow up the roster and promised Rockets fans that they'll

7 players the Rockets could add on the veterans minimum - Space City Scoop

Image
Ale Len #25 of the Sacramento Kings (Photo by Alika Jenner/Getty Images) With Houston Rockets general manager Rafael Stone prioritizing the veterans minimum, let’s take a look at seven players that could be added on the minimum. Newly promoted Houston Rockets general manager and first time executive Rafael Stone faces challenges with the current Rockets roster, as the Rockets have $129.3 million committed to nine players, which doesn’t even include reserve guard Austin Rivers, who holds a player’s option. Stone has expressed the importance of bringing in seasoned veterans on the minimum, and rightfully so, as the Rockets have struck gold with players such as Gerald Green, Luc Mbah a Moute, Kenneth Faried, and Jeff Green over the years. On Saturday, Stone joined Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle and discussed the importance of the Rockets identifying solid contributors on the veterans-minimum. “It depends entirely on what we think we can do with our minimum exception.

Rafael Stone: For right player, Rockets could trade into 2020 draft - Rockets Wire

Image
The Houston Rockets don’t currently have a selection in the NBA’s 2020 draft, owing to previous trades. However, that doesn’t mean they won’t eventually acquire one, according to new GM Rafael Stone. In a new Q&A with Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle , Stone said this about their status for the league’s Nov. 18 draft: We certainly wouldn’t mind getting into the draft, particularly if somebody becomes available we think will help us win now. We’re still in the win-now [mode], more than the develop four or five years from now mode. There are guys in the draft I think can play right away. We’ve had teams tell us they would be open to [a trade]. I think we probably can get draft picks if the right guy is there. Houston Rockets’ Head Coach Explains His Topmost Priorities & First Order of Action Since Appoi ... - EssentiallySports

The Houston Rockets picked Stephen Silas to fill the shoes of their former coach, Mike D’Antoni. After another disappointing run in the playoffs, D’Antoni did not continue as the Rockets’ head coach. The now 14th coach of the franchise is making his debut as a head coach with the Rockets. He spent his last two seasons as Rick Carlisle’s assistant coach to the Dallas Mavericks. As the youngest assistant coach at 27, Silas’ first assistant coach gig was with the Charlotte Hornets in 2000-2001. When he joined the Mavericks in 208-19, he was given the responsibility of improving the team’s offense. He did brilliantly that job brilliantly. The way he helped in leading the Mavericks to the highest offensive rating last season proves that he has the potential to lead the Rockets. With almost 20 years of experience as an assistant coach, it is surprising that this is Stephen’s first stint as head coach. But out of everyone, why did the Rockets go with Silas? Well, it looks like everyone, the

New Houston Rockets GM Rafael Stone: “We’re still all-in” - Yahoo Sports

Image
For a few years now, the Houston Rockets have seen themselves as championship contenders — and they came close to a ring with the James Harden/Chris Paul team in 2018 that was up 3-2 on the Warriors in the conference finals. Last season, with Russell Westbrook, the small-ball Rockets talked title but never looked like a threat to the West’s elite. Houston heads into next season with a new coach in Stephen Silas and a new GM in Rafael Stone, but Stone told Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle in a Q&A the goal of winning a title has not changed. “We’re still all-in. Our goal is to win a championship. We’ll do anything we can to get us closer to that goal.” “The good news is we have really, really good basketball players… I’m getting a talented roster that has already won; not to the level we want but won in a big way. It’s about being very smart to keep the good stuff and be additive. You don’t want to do anything rash. You want to see if there are changes that will help….

Rafael Stone says Rockets still have 'all-in' approach to offseason - Rockets Wire

Image
In the upcoming 2020-21 season, All-Star guards James Harden and Russell Westbrook will be 31 and 32 years old, respectively. Their aging curve has led some around the NBA to wonder whether the Houston Rockets might keep one eye on a potential rebuild in the years ahead. Per new GM Rafael Stone, that does not seem to be the case. In a fresh Q&A with Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle , Stone says the Rockets remain “all in” on a championship run, and with a clear emphasis on immediate roster upgrades. Among his comments: In our situation, lots of people want our players. That’s a great place to be. You have to make sure if you do something, it makes you better. I’m very optimistic the team is going to be very competitive. Whether it is rolling out the same guys and Steve [Silas] is trying to make tweaks here and there and using mid-level, that’s a way of being very competitive. Maybe there’s a deal or two that can help us. We’re going to be very aggressive. … We’re still

Report: Rockets have serious interest in free agent Jae’Sean Tate - Rockets Wire

Image
The Houston Rockets are believed to have “serious interest” in free agent Jae’Sean Tate, per John Hollinger of The Athletic . Now 25 years old, Tate played his college basketball at Ohio State (2014-2018) before joining the Antwerp Giants (2018-19) in Belgium and the Sydney Kings (2019-20) in Australia. While he’s only 6-foot-4, he’s strong and versatile enough to play as both a guard and forward. Here’s how Hollinger recently described Tate, whom he believes would require a contract larger than the NBA’s minimum salary: The Ohio State product had a massive year in Australia after a solid 2019 Summer League and is just 24 years old; as such, he’s quickly become one of the most highly-regarded players based outside the U.S. Notably he hasn’t re-signed in Australia for 2020-21, with signs pointing toward him signing an NBA contract instead. Tate is listed at just 6-4 but has a strong frame and plus athleticism; he is comfortable battling in the paint and actually played power forwa

Rockets telegraph big roster changes in post-Daryl Morey, Mike D’Antoni era - ClutchPoints

Image
The Houston Rockets have already undergone a significant shift in culture with former head coach Mike D’Antoni and president Daryl Morey stepping down. Rafael Stone will essentially fill the void left by Morey in the basketball operations department, while former Dallas Mavericks head coach Stephen Silas takes over for D’Antoni as head coach. The new regime hardly seems wedded to playing “small ball.” Stone said Thursday the Rockets will not limit themselves strictly to wing players and guards, which is essentially what Houston did last season. Rather, Stone indicated the Rockets could choose to add some size this offseason. Rafael Stone says the Rockets aren't necessarily tethered to micro-ball going into the offseason "We're definitely not going into this process thinking 'We don't want anyone over 6'7." Says the Rockets may add some size to provide Silas with some more "optionality". — Salman Ali (@SalmanAliNBA) November 5, 2020

James Harden Trade Packages Houston Rockets Should Actually Consider - Bleacher Report

Image
Ben Margot/Associated Press Just one day after Daryl Morey was introduced as the Philadelphia 76ers' new president of basketball operations, rumors of a possible James Harden reunion hit the cyber-waves. According to Stadium's Shams Charania, " Philadelphia is expected to be interested in and pursue James Harden." Of course, he went on to add that Harden trade proposals are likely to be met with an "emphatic no" from the Houston Rockets, which should come as no surprise. Harden is 31 years old and coming off his third consecutive scoring title. He's 12th in NBA history in career MVP shares. As long as he's a Rocket, the team figures to have a top-tier offense. Since he arrived in Houston in 2012-13, the Rockets are first in points per 100 possessions, second in effective field-goal percentage and sixth in net points per 100 possessions. Barring truly mind-blowing offers, retaining Harden for the back end of his prime would be the safer bet

NBA Rumors: This Magic-Rockets trade breaks up Harden-Westbrook duo - NBA Analysis Network

Image
Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports There is one thing that is for sure in Houston— the James Harden and Russell Westbrook experiment has not worked. Now, the Rockets could be looking for a trade partner for one of their two superstars. Could this present an opportunity for the Orlando Magic to capitalize? If they decide to trade Westbrook, the Magic could be in for a huge blockbuster deal. Orlando is in an interesting position. They were the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference this season. That is a position they have been fighting for year-in and year-out but they have not been able to improve much beyond. The Magic could also look to tank and build some draft capital with Jonathan Isaac likely to miss all of the upcoming NBA season after tearing his ACL. However, trading for a talent like Westbrook would keep them competitive as he has shown to be able to carry teams to the playoffs before. As for the Rockets, they have developed their own style of play. They like to score points

Houston Rockets' new coach, GM say goal remains the same for franchise: NBA championship - ESPN

5:18 PM ET After an offseason of major change for the Houston Rockets, the team's new general manager and head coach emphasized that the franchise's primary goal remains the same: Chase a championship with a roster that features perennial MVP candidate James Harden as the franchise centerpiece. "For the last eight years or so, our goal has been to win a championship because we had James Harden," general manager Rafael Stone, a longtime Rockets front office employee promoted after Daryl Morey's resignation, said during a virtual news conference to introduce recently hired head coach Stephen Silas. "We've still got James Harden. Our goal is still to win a championship, and if you've got him, you're halfway there. "It's incumbent on me and Stephen and the whole team to figure out the rest of the whole, but the key piece is there." Rockets await their playoff fate - Philadelphia Neshoba Democrat

Image
By STEVE SWOGETINSKY The Neshoba Central Rockets will have to wait until games are played this Friday night before they know their playoff fate. The Rockets was expected to enter the Class 5A playoffs November 13 as the No. 2 team out of Region 2-5A, However, the Ridgeland Titans were quarantined last Friday with COVID-19. The forfeit loss gave them their first region loss. Ridgeland is the only team to beat Neshoba Central. These two teams along with Holmes Central, are in a three-way tie for first. If it goes down that way, Neshoba Central will finish first in the region based on points. However, if Holmes Central loses to Vicksburg Friday night, there would a two-way tie for first and Ridgeland would enter the playoffs as the No. 1 team because of their win over Neshoba Central. Neshoba Central did not play last Friday night. Their game with Cleveland Central was not played. Cleveland was quarantined with the COVID-19 and had to forfeit. And the Rockets do not have a game this

John Lucas nears coaching deal with Rockets; Nate McMillan off board - Rockets Wire

Image
The Houston Rockets are close to reaching an agreement with John Lucas to be an assistant on the staff of new coach Stephen Silas, as first reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic . Since 2016, Lucas has worked with the Rockets as the director of player development for previous head coach Mike D’Antoni. The 66-year-old veteran coach was reportedly one of three finalists in Houston’s recent search for the lead job, alongside Silas and Jeff Van Gundy. In the 1990s and early 2000s, Lucas was a head coach with San Antonio, Philadelphia, and Cleveland. His age and extensive experience could be a good fit with the 47-year-old Silas, who is becoming an NBA head coach for the first time. Lucas also has existing relationships with current Houston players like All-Star guards James Harden and Russell Westbrook, which is part of why he was a finalist for the main job. The Rockets are near agreement on deal with John Lucas to be an assistant coach under Stephen Silas, sources tell @TheAthl
