Thompson finishes No. 2 in national high school football poll for 2020-2021 - AL.com

Class 7A state champion Thompson finished No. 2 in the High School Football America 100 rankings for the 2020-2021 athletic season.

HSFA compiled one top 100 after the fall and another after the spring since some states moved football until later in the year due to the pandemic.

The Warriors were No. 2 in both polls behind top-ranked IMG Academy.

Mark Freeman's team went 14-0 last fall, outscoring opponents 604-222. The Warriors defeated Auburn 29-28 in the state championship game.

Quarterback Conner Harrell was named the Class 7A Back of the Year by the Alabama Sports Writers Association, while DL/LB Jeremiah Alexander was named Lineman of the Year.

It was Thompson's second straight state title.

Westlake (Austin, Texas), Grayson (Ga.) and Archbishop Hoban (Ohio) rounded out the top five in the final HSFA poll.

Thompson's Region 3 rivals Hoover and Hewitt-Trussville also made the top 100. The Bucs were No. 45, while the Huskies came in at No. 80. Hoover went 11-2 with its only losses coming to the Warriors. Hewitt went 9-3, losing twice to Thompson and once to Hoover.

The only other Alabama team to make the top 100 was Class 5A champ St. Paul's at No. 90. The Saints went 15-0, knocking off Pleasant Grove 29-21 in the title game.

Two more teams were listed as "On the Bubble."

Class 7A runner-up Auburn was No. 108, while Class 6A champion Pinson Valley was No. 114. The Indians won their second title in three years behind Mr. Football and Alabama signee Ga'Quincy McKinstry.
