WEDNESDAY'S ACTION: Unlucky whistle clouds just how well struggling Pistons fared vs. Near-playoff team

Game notes: The Pistons have already locked up a spot in the top three of the NBA draft lottery (set for mid-May) — which gets them a 52.1% chance of a top-four pick, and a 14% shot at No. 1 — as they're 9 ½ games "up" on No. 4 team Charlotte with just six games to play. But a loss to the woeful Rockets tonight would all but lock up the No. 1 spot; Houston enters the game 1½ "back" of Detroit. (San Antonio, by the way, is No. 3, at 19-57.)

These two teams, of course, ended up picking first and second overall back in the 2021 draft. The Pistons took Cade Cunningham, who finished third in Rookie of the Year voting and made the All-Rookie first team. Joining him on the All-Rookie team was No. 2 pick Jalen Green. The 21-year-old has been even better this season, averaging 21.9 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists a game. It has come on volume shooting, however, as he's averaging 17.7 shots over 34.1 minutes a game while shooting just 41.5% overall and 33.5% from beyond the arc.

The Pistons, of course, have only gotten a few games out of Cunningham this season, due to a shin injury. But that has allowed their 2022 No. 5 overall pick, Jaden Ivey, plenty of time to develop. Ivey has been on a tear over his past six games, averaging 19.7 points, 6.8 assists and 3.8 rebounds in 34.6 minutes; he has also found his 3-point stroke, hitting 42.1% from beyond the arc over that span.

After this one, the Pistons have just five games remaining; they'll start their April countdown to the draft lottery on Sunday in Orlando before getting their home finales on Tuesday and Wednesday, against Brooklyn and Indiana, respectively. The Rockets, meanwhile, will have just four games left, starting with a visit from the L.A. Lakers on Sunday night, followed by their home finale against the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday.

  • Indiana freshman guard Jalen Hood-Schifino, a projected lottery pick, will forgo his remaining college eligibility and enter the 2023 NBA draft, he told ESPN on Friday morning.

"For me, the time is now," Hood-Schifino told ESPN. "This has been a dream of mine since I was a little boy."

Hood-Schifino, the No. 13 prospect in ESPN's NBA draft projections, was voted the Big Ten Conference Freshman of Year and second-team All-Big Ten after averaging 13.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists.

"My freshman season was nothing short of amazing," said Hood-Schifino, who is 6-foot-5 with a 6-foot-10 wingspan. "My coaches kept their word by having the ultimate trust in me as a freshman. We didn't win a national championship, but overall the season was successful and experiencing March Madness was a surreal moment."

He later made the announcement on Instagram.

Although he wasn't initially projected as a clear-cut one-and-done player, Hood-Schifino emerged as a potential top-10 draft pick based largely on his productivity and impact on the Hoosiers' winning.

In mid-December, Hood-Schifino was asked to step into an outsized role upon the team losing starting point guard Xavier Johnson to a season-ending injury. After a turbulent start, Hood-Schifino grabbed hold of the point guard position and helped catapult Indiana to victories in 11 of their final 15 regular-season games, securing third in the Big Ten and a No. 4 seed in the NCAA tournament.

"NBA teams were able to see that I can take over a game, create my own shot, run a team, that I have a high IQ, that I'm tough, and that I have a unique pace to my game," Hood-Schifino said. "I'm looking forward to showing the NBA teams my body measurements matching what's on paper, my athleticism, and my shooting ability."

Hood-Schifino fits the NBA prototype as a big, ballhandling lead guard with versatile shot-making prowess, live-dribble playmaking creativity and defensive toughness.

The NBA draft combine is set for May 15-21 in Chicago, and the draft will be June 22 in New York.

Updated 2023 NBA Mock Draft After Brandon Miller Declares

Headlined by 7-foot-2 sensation Victor Wembanyama and Alabama Crimson Tide superstar Brandon Miller, the 2023 NBA draft will be special. The lottery picks are always highly coveted, but when you consider some of the high-level talents in this draft, front offices have likely been excited for quite some time.

The Crimson Tide was officially knocked out of the NCAA tournament last weekend against the San Diego State Aztecs and to the surprise of nobody, that was the conclusion of Brandon Miller's collegiate career. Miller didn't play his best in March, but will still be one of the first few prospects taken off the draft board as he officially declared for the NBA draft.

In a recently posted 2023 NBA mock draft by NBC Sports, Miller is projected to be selected third overall by the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs have struggled over recent years, but nobody knows the game of basketball like Gregg Popovich. Getting to work with someone like Popovich early in his career will be the best development Brandon Miller could ask for.
