Goalkeepers Just Can't Stop Scoring In Chilean Football. The Latest Goal Is A Last-second Diving Header In Dramatic Finale
It's becoming quite the season for goalkeepers in Chile.
Just weeks after Leandro Requena scored what could be the longest range goal in history, Deportes Temuco goalkeeper Yerko Urra also got himself on the scoresheet.
With his team trailing 1-0 at home to San Marcos de Arica in the 97th minute, Urra ran the length of the pitch to attack what was surely Temuco's last corner of the match.
After a teammate flicked the corner on at the near post, Urra reacted brilliantly to leap forward and head the ball into the roof of the net – a finish any striker would have been pleased with.
It was a crucial goal, too, as the draw helps Temuco keep pace with early leaders San Luis and La Serena in the race for promotion back to Chile's top division.
"A goalkeeper always goes [up for a corner] with the intention of helping or bothering [the opposition] so a teammate can score," Urra told AS Chile.
"This time it was my turn and I never imagined it [would happen]."
Urra credited Temuco head coach Juan José Ribera for giving him permission to go up for the corner kick.
"Otherwise I would have stayed in goal, since if I went up then they could write me down in a counterattack," Urra said. "It's details that make the difference.
"I thank the coach for giving me permission, although I also went with the conviction that I could do something."
Urra also added that he loved the feeling of scoring a goal.
"In my position we're not used to it," he said.
Urra said that he would always watch Rogério Ceni and José Luis Chilavert, two legendary South American goalkeepers who earned reputations for scoring goals from free kicks and penalties.
"I love that, but there are already designated players here," Urra added. "At least this time the opportunity arose and I managed to convert."

Next Goal Wins Trailer Shows Michael Fassbender Attempt To Turn Around The Worst Soccer Club Ever
© Andrew Korpan 4/26/23A trailer for Taika Waititi's new film, Next Goal Wins, has arrived and shows Michael Fassbender attempting to coach potentially the worst soccer club ever.
The trailer, which runs 130 seconds long, opens with Thomas Rongen (Fassbender) being fired from his job with one alternative: Coach the American Samoa football club. It's inspired by a true story, and this is something Waititi had fun with as he lists all of his losses (such as Best Picture for Jojo Rabbit) during the trailer.
Coaching this team, however, is not just a vacation to the beach — the American Samoa football team is dreadful. They lost a game 31-0 at one point (hence Rongen's booze-filled suitcase). But in true Waititi fashion, the trailer seems light-hearted and retains the joy that most of his films have as seen when Rongen slowly learns to not take himself so seriously and the team begins to build comradery.
Next Goal Wins is the latest feature from Taika Waititi after Thor: Love and Thunder and a return to independent filmmaking. It's being distributed by Searchlight Pictures, who handled Waititi's Oscar-nominated film Jojo Rabbit — which, despite the fact that it lost Best Picture, still took home a Best Adapted Screenplay award and was nominated for six total awards that night. I'm sure Searchlight is hoping for a similar kind of success with Next Goal Wins.
The film stars Michael Fassbender but also features Will Arnett, Elizabeth Moss, Oscar Kightley, David Fane, and Beulah Koale among many more.
Next Goal Wins will be released on November 17.

Taika Waititi's 'Next Goal Wins' Scores First Trailer
Next Goal Wins brought its first trailer at CinemaCon in Las Vegas Wednesday.
The soccer feature from Taika Waititi is based on the 2014 documentary of the same name, and follows the national football team of American Samoa and their rise from underdogs to winners under Dutch coach Thomas Rongen as they attempt to become a FIFA World Cup-qualifying outfit.

Set to ABBA's "Take a Chance on Me," the trailer begins with Michael Fassbender's Rongen being fired and sent to American Samoa for a new job. He has his work cut out for him, as the team has suffered loss after loss, and has not scored a single goal.
And though filmmaker Waititi is an Oscar winner, the marketing opted to focus on his losses — including the Teen Choice Award for Thor: Ragnarok. After all, a winning story is made all the more satisfying if it comes from someone who has lost.
The cast also includes Will Arnett, Elisabeth Moss, David Fane, Beulah Koale Oscar Kightley and Lehi Falepapalangi. Searchlight has a date of Nov. 17 for the film.
This marks Fassbender's first big-screen role since 2019, when he was among the leads of X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Waititi was last in theaters with Thor: Love and Thunder, the Marvel Studios film that was released last year.
