The Top Tennis And Basketball Shoe Collaborations

The synergy between tennis and basketball has come to the forefront this year. Stars from both sports have attended one another's games (Kobe Bryant watched Naomi Osaka in New York), and imitated each other's on-court celebrations (Frances Tiafoe embraced his inner Lebron James in Melbourne).

It's clear the athletes have great mutual respect and admiration for one another, and one other way they've shown off that respect is by collaborating on shoe designs. Though not all new this year, a collection of crossover shoes have made a splash in recent history.

Here are the Top 6 shoe collaborations:

1

LEBRON JAMES and ANDRE AGASSI

Tech Challenge Nike Lebron 16

Andre Agassi was one of the first ATP players to take on-court fashion risks. In 1990, his rebellious ensembles drew a lot of attention. One of his most memorable looks was his 1990 French Open neon-pink outfit with jean shorts, pink headband and matching Nike "Hot Lava" Air Tech Challenge II shoes.

James used Agassi's  as inspiration for his new shoe, the Tech Challenge Nike Lebron 16, which was released in May of this year.

The basketball shoes display the same color way and splattered detail as Agassi's signature 1990 shoe, along with a black version.

2

KYRIE IRVING and NICK KYRGIOS

Vapor X Kyrie 5s

Nick Kyrgios has expressed his love for the Celtics over and over again, in interviews, on social media, and with his clothing choices. Australian Kyrie Irving was on the Celtics team, adding more fuel to Kyrgios' devotion, though it will be interesting to see if Kyrgios' allegiance shifts to Brooklyn as a result of the NBA's offseason shuffling.

To kick off the 2019 season, Kyrgios and Irving teamed up to create a basketball shoe that's fit to be worn on the tennis court. The world No. 30 wore the shoes at the Australian Open. The coolest part of the design is the Nike Court and "Kyrie" brand logos on the tongue.

3

MICHAEL JORDAN and ROGER FEDERER

Nike Court Zoom Vapor RF X AJ3 by Jordan

In 2014, Roger Federer teamed up with one of his idols to create a limited edition shoe for the US Open. The collaboration between two of the greatest, most dominant athletes in history combined details from the Nike Zoom Vapor 9.5 Tour and the Air Jordan III.

Made with premium leather with elephant-print on the sides, the Nike Court Zoom Vapor RF x AJ3 has both RF and Jumpman signature graphics. In 2017, Federer sported the "Fire Red" and "Atmos" versions, continuing their historic collaboration.

4

MICHAEL JORDAN and Serena Williams

Nike Court Flare

Serena Williams began wearing the Nike Court Flare in 2014, winning the 2014 US Open and 2015 Australian Open in a black pair and the French Open in 2015 in pink. The sneaker has a built-in ankle cuff which is often seen on the basketball court but rarely on a tennis court. She's worn it in a lot of colors since then, even a "Vivid Sulfur" yellow at the 2016 Australian Open.

In 2017, Nike created a special edition of the sneaker to honor Serena's historic 23rd Grand Slam title win in Melbourne. This red and pink sneakers featured the same color ways as the Air Jordan 1s with extra hot pink.

5

DOMINIQUE WILKINS and MICHAEL CHANG

Reebok Court Victory Pump

The Victory Pump shoe was one of the earlier crossover shoe in basketball and tennis. First created as a basketball performance shoe in 1989, it was worn by former Atlanta Hawks star, Dominique Wilkins. Many other NBA players donned the Pumps before they were converted into a tennis shoe, the Court Victory Pump, for Michael Chang, who started wearing them in 1991.

Reebok officially arrived on the tennis shoe scene with the release of the Court Victory Pump, giving Nike a run for their money over the course of the '90s. Although I have never owned a pair of these shoes , aesthetically they are one of my all-time favorites. The Court Victory Pumps came back in 2014 and were re-released in the original Chang colors in 2016.

6

MICHAEL JORDANand SLOANE STEPHENS

NikeCourt Zoom Zero x Air Jordan VIII Aqua

For the 2019 US Open, Nike made a special shoe for 2017 champion Sloane Stephens. She wore a hybrid of the aqua upper of the Air Jordan VIII's with the outsole of the NikeCourt Zoom Zero. The Air Jordan VIII's came out in 1993, the year Stephens was born. She gets to add her name to an exclusive list along with Serena and Federer as players who have collaborated with the Air Jordan brand.

So while it's not a totally new trend, tennis and basketball players have collaborated on quite a few shoe designs this year, mostly within Nike. It makes sense since both sports have plenty of shoe game freedom. Hopefully fans will see even more collaborations in the near future, as these crossover efforts make for some of the most popular products.

Nike Designer On Crafting The Sabrina 1 Signature Basketball Shoe

The Sabrina 1 signature basketball shoe from Nike for WNBA All-Star Sabrina Ionescu.

Nike

New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu wasn't just along for the ride in creating her signature basketball sneaker with Nike NKE , the Sabrina 1 that launches Sept. 1. She was in tune every step of the way.

"It was cool to see her attention to detail and knowledge of what we did," Benjamin Nethongkome, Nike Basketball senior footwear designer, tells me. "From a creation standpoint, her partnership was really refreshing. She was very vocal out of the gate. Even at that early stage, she was very engaged, very vocal."

Nethongkome, who has designed signature basketball shoes for a variety of Nike athletes, hadn't yet worked with a WNBA athlete before connecting with Ionescu, the former NCAA Naismith Player of the Year while at Oregon and now a two-time WNBA All-Star in New York. He says chatting with Ionescu wasn't at all like speaking to an athlete working on her first signature model.

The detailed stitching offers reinforcement on the upper of the Sabrina 1 from Nike.

Nike

"This is Sabrina's first shoe, first go-ahead," he says. "I was shocked to hear some of the things she requested. Usually more seasoned athletes would make those kinds of requests or have that kind of awareness. I was really impressed by that."

Nethongkome says the design team had some ideas about how to start the process but relied on Ionescu to really lead the way. "We have some scenarios in our back pocket," he says, "but we tested the waters a little bit in this case with Sabrina. Do you envision your style of play being more like this or like that? If it is like this, we use these toolkits."

The designers and the athlete settled on crafting a shoe for her style of play, which Nethongkome described as a "shifty guard" that required a sneaker to keep her on her toes and be the conductor of her team. "To be quick on her feet we had to look at toolkits for her style of play," he says.

React foam is part of the underfoot technology for Sabrina Ionescu's Nike Sabrina 1 signature shoe.

Nike

The design, then, started from the hardwood up. Nike landed on React foam underfoot because it is a responsive foam with a plush sensation. They coupled that with a Zoom Air bag in the forefoot to promote quicker movements and decisions when on her toes.

Nethongkome says both those technologies focus on Ionescu. "They are the right ingredients for the right call," he says. "She wanted something that feels comfortable and responsive." Other foams may have more bounce or came firmer, but she needed to focus comfort from start to finish. And instead of dropping a crash pad in the heel for landing, the Zoom Air in the forefoot focuses on quick movements.

The midsole features a shank plate, which allowed designers to excavate materials and weight on the medial side and use the shank to provide lightweight stability underfoot.

Then came the upper. "When consumers and kids see the shoe, they are going to see the upper," Nethongkome says. "We know that comfort was queen. It is minimally built, and we only added support where we need it."

Nike

Nike features minimal textile reinforcements with embroidered stitch work. "Diamond pieces added support only where we need it and dissipate where we don't need support," he says. "It spoke to the craftsmanship rooted in her heritage of Romania."

The midfoot features lightweight mesh and localized cables to provide support, a minimal design focused on support.

Nike used a TPU shield coming up from the outsole to provide support during cutting. Nethongkome says that design really focuses on reinforcing the base of the shoe for on-court movement, but getting more minimal as they moved up the shoe.

As with any signature sneaker, Nethongkome says Nike wanted an iconic look, something fans could spot from the rafters. On the Sabrina 1, Nethongkome says they added a racing stripe that ribbons the shoe from the tongue to the lacing to the bottom. Crafted in a lowercase "i" to tie to her last name, that stripe becomes recognizable as the Sabrina 1, even from a distance. "We wanted to be undoubtedly recognized as a Sabrina shoe and we wanted the world to recognize that," Nethongkome says.

Nike

Following an announcement of the Sabrina 1 launch earlier this year, Nike has kept shelling out special player edition designs for Ionescu during the WNBA season, all ahead of the Sept. 1 launch.

"We wanted to energize the game and energize her a little bit," Nethongkome says of the strategy. "Some of [the player editions] will be released to the public." Some won't. He says to expect the Thanks Uncle Phil colorway of black and gold to remain just for her, but the Oregon Ducks colorway to eventually release.

The Sept. 1 launch will feature three colors, the grey of the Ionic, a black and white Magnetic and the purple and yellow of Spark. Ionescu had her hand in all the colors too. Or in the lack of color.

"Initially we had really cool pops of color on them," Nethongkome says about the black and white and grey versions. "She just kept wanting to dial back the color pops, saying 'I'm not the loudest person on the floor, I want it to be muted.'" But even with two "quiet" colorways, the Spark offers more animation, showing how the design can turn down or up as needed.

Following the Sept. 1 launch of the Sabrina 1, expect the holiday season to provide another opportunity to tell the Ionescu story. "We gotta pace," Nethongkome says, "not overheat out of the gates. The colors are going to be exciting, the messaging is exciting and having Sabrina, a woman athlete, leading the charge is going to be exciting."
