Florida Loses Experienced Defender For 2024 Season Due To Injury, Billy Napier Announces

Florida suffered a notable blow to its defensive line depth over the weekend.

Billy Napier shared in his Monday press conference that DL Jamari Lyons is out for the 2024 season. Lyons was injured in the Gators' first scrimmage of fall camp over the weekend.

"Jamari Lyons broke his ankle, and he'll be out for the season," Napier told reporters. "Obviously, our thoughts and prayers are with him."

"We got all 132 (players) on the spot there to support him as he was carried off the field," the third-year head coach added.

Lyons, listed at over 6-3 and 304 pounds on the Florida roster, is entering his third season in the program. A Cocoa, Florida, native and Viera High School product, he signed with UF as part of Napier's first class after Dan Mullen's dismissal.

In 2022, Lyons, made just three appearances, allowing him to take a redshirt.

Last season, as a redshirt freshman, Lyons appeared in all 12 games for the Gators. He recorded 20 total tackles, including 10 solo stops and 2.5 for loss.

It's the second time this fall camp that a regular Florida contributor's health has made headlines. Earlier this month, UF starting running back Montrell Johnson was revealed to be considered week-to-week after having his knee scoped.

Napier has long been dealing with hot seat chatter as the Gators are just 11-14 in his tenure. Florida plays one of the nation's toughest schedules in 2024, and Napier's squad will face a big challenge right off the bat.

The Miami Hurricanes, ranked No. 19 in the preseason AP Top 25, come to Gainesville on Aug. 31 for a 3:30 p.M. Showdown in The Swamp. The Gators and Hurricanes last met in Orlando, a 24-20 game that went Florida's way. UM's last trip to The Swamp came in the 2008 season, a 26-3 win for Urban Meyer's Gators over Randy Shannon's Canes. Miami leads the all-time series 29-27.
