Who's Playing

Washington Huskies @ Utah Utes

Current Records: Washington 8-4, Utah 10-2

How To Watch What to Know

The Utah Utes will stay at home for another game and welcome the Washington Huskies at 6:00 p.M. ET on December 31st at Jon M. Huntsman Center. Utah will be strutting in after a victory while Washington will be stumbling in from a loss.

Utah has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won four matchups by 22 points or more this season. They put the hurt on the Cougars with a sharp 80-58 victory on Friday. The score was close at the half, but Utah pulled away in the second half with 49 points.

Utah got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Keba Keita out in front who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 11 rebounds. Branden Carlson was another key contributor, scoring 19 points along with eight rebounds and five assists.

Meanwhile, Washington unfortunately witnessed the end of their four-game winning streak on Friday. They took a 73-69 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Buffaloes. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Washington has scored all season.

The losing side was boosted by Keion Brooks Jr., who scored 20 points along with eight rebounds.

The Utes' win was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 10-2. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 83.6 points per game. As for the Huskies, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-4.

Sunday's matchup is shaping up to be a masterclass in shooting: Utah just can't miss this season, having made 48.4% of their shots per game. However, it's not like Washington struggles in that department as they've made 47.2% of their shots per game this season. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.

Going forward, Utah is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by ten points. This contest will be their sixth straight at home (so far over this stretch they are 3-2 against the spread).

  • Utah Quarterback Cam Rising Sets A New Career-high In First Game Since ACL Injury

    Aug. 30, 2024, 4:21 a.M.

    Updated: 6:19 a.M.

The rust lasted for a play.

Utah quarterback Cam Rising dropped back on his first snap after 605 days and threw an incompletion while taking a big hit.

After that, it was game on.

The seventh-year senior ended that first drive since tearing his ACL in January 2023 by tossing a 64-yard touchdown to a wide-open Dijon Stanley. From there, Thursday's season opener at Rice-Eccles Stadium was about the Utes' veteran leader flexing old muscles.

Rising spread the ball around the field, finding his old reliable target, tight end Brant Kuithe, for three more scores.

By halftime, Rising's day was over and so was the game. He finished with five touchdowns, a career-high, and 254 yards on 10-of-15 passing.

The Utes cruised to a 49-0 win over Southern Utah behind their long-haired leader.

"I thought it was the Cam of old," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. "I think he was sharp."

It could've been far worse for the T-Birds.

The No. 12 team in the country scored on all five of its first-half drives. Perhaps the Utah starters' only true miscue was when Rising missed wide receiver Mycah Pittman streaking down the middle for what would've been a sure touchdown.

The Utes had 339 yards by halftime. Rising's five touchdowns were the most by a Utah quarterback in a half since Brian Johnson in 2008. And on the night Utah welcomed Hall of Famer Alex Smith into the school's new "Ring of Honor," Rising passed Smith on Utah's all-time touchdown list, moving up to 50 in his career.

Stanley led Utah in receiving, with three catches for 150 yards and two touchdowns.

True freshman Isaac Wilson made his debut after Rising's day ended. He finished 7-of-11 for 74 yards, a touchdown and two picks. He also ran for 21 yards. His lone touchdown pass was to former BYU basketball player Caleb Lohner.

In the second half, running back Mike Mitchell scored his first touchdown as a Ute.

"We did what we were supposed to do," Whittingham said. "We just had some talented guys out there making plays. It is good to get that one under the belt."

Utah will play fellow Big 12 member Baylor at home next week in a game that won't count as part of the conference schedule.

Three Takeaways From No. 12 Utah's Win Over Southern Utah

No. 12 Utah kicked off the 2024 season in impressive fashion with stars Cam Rising and Brant Kuithe returning to make strong statements in a commanding 49-0 victory over Southern Utah. The Utes delivered the expected result, showcasing their dominance while fine-tuning their game plan. As the team now sets its sights on a more challenging test against the Baylor Bears, here are three takeaways from Thursday night's performance.

    Utes run game shows promise

One of the most encouraging signs for Utah was the performance of their running game. While no single rusher stood out — the leading rusher managed just 34 yards — the team still compiled 185 rushing yards. This collective effort underscores a promising ground attack, one that has clearly benefited from improvements along the offensive line. The push from the line was solid, creating enough space for running backs to find creases and utilize cutback lanes, a notable improvement from last season when running room was often hard to come by.

However, for the rushing attack to be sustainable throughout the season, Utah will need one or more backs to emerge as go-to options. The distribution of carries worked against Southern Utah, but consistency from key players will be essential as the Utes face tougher defenses. The balance of an effective passing game, led by Rising and Kuithe, seemed to open up more opportunities for the ground game, setting a positive tone for the season ahead.

    Caleb Lohner's impactful debut

Caleb Lohner, a converted basketball player, made a notable debut for Utah. Playing significant snaps, Lohner showcased his athleticism and versatility, particularly with his acrobatic, contested touchdown catch late in the game. The play, which appeared to be a back shoulder throw, demonstrated Lohner's excellent hand-eye coordination and physicality, qualities that will make him a valuable asset in the tight end rotation.

Lohner's route-running, physical presence, and involvement in both the passing and running game stood out, highlighting his potential to become a key contributor. His performance suggests that he could be a significant part of Utah's offensive plans this season, especially as he continues to develop his skills on the football field.

    Keanu Tanuvasa's disruptive presence

Defensive lineman Keanu Tanuvasa emerged as a potential difference-maker for the Utes. While he didn't register tackles behind the line of scrimmage, his ability to penetrate the backfield and disrupt plays was evident. Tanuvasa's quick first step and knack for beating offensive linemen allowed him to create pressure consistently, forcing Southern Utah to adjust their game plan with quick passes to avoid his rush.

Though Tanuvasa missed a few opportunities to make game-changing plays, his consistent backfield presence was a highlight of Utah's defensive effort. As the Utes prepare for stiffer competition, Tanuvasa's disruptiveness could prove crucial. If he can maintain this level of play, he will be a key figure in Utah's defense, creating headaches for opposing offenses throughout the season.

Utah welcomes Baylor into Rice-Eccles Stadium next Saturday at 3:30 p.M. ET.
