What Sir Alex Ferguson Did After Man Utd Player Refused To Shake His Hand After Cup Final Snub

Sir Alex Ferguson's surprising response to a Manchester United player who snubbed his handshake after a cup final has been revealed.

13-time Premier League winners Ferguson had plenty of run-ins with players over the years and would not take kindly to any type of disrespect.

And back in 2007, he was snubbed by one of his very own players following the FA Cup final at Wembley.

United were beaten by Chelsea, with Didier Drogba scoring the only goal of the game in extra time to give the Blues a fourth FA Cup triumph.

But afterwards Patrice Evra decided to not shake the hand offered by Ferguson, having been furious at not featuring in the showpiece.

Ferguson had initially told Evra he wouldn't be playing in jest before confirming he would be starting at left-back and supporting Cristiano Ronaldo.

Yet the following day Ferguson announced he had changed his mind and proceeded to start Gabriel Heinze, who played the entirety of the showpiece - much to Evra's anger.

"In 2007, we had the FA Cup final at Wembley against Chelsea and I remember the day before the game, Sir Alex Ferguson told me that I wasn't going to be playing.

Speaking on The Overlap, Evra said: "There was an article in the papers saying that I was a drug dealer, a fighter and that I was part of a gang, so the boss told me that he couldn't play me in the final because the Glazers told him to leave me out. He turned around and told me that he was joking and that I would be playing on the left with Cristiano Ronaldo.

"The next day, I got a knock on the door and it was the boss telling me that he wasn't going to play me and that he was going to start Gabriel Heinze instead. After five minutes of the final, he told me to warm up, but I never came on and I was fuming. I took my medal and threw it on the floor. The boss came to shake my hand and I didn't shake his hand."

Many would have expected Ferguson to punish Evra for his actions given the high-profile fall-outs he had with the likes of Roy Keane and Ruud van Nistelrooy.

However, Ferguson proceeded to apologise to the Frenchman, who wanted to leave the club in that moment.

He continued: "Two weeks later, he called me to say sorry. He said he made a mistake. After that game, I called my agent and told him I didn't want to play for United anymore and that it was disrespectful. This was the moment I was going to leave United."

Evra was only in his first full season at United but ended up staying put and making 379 appearances for the Red Devils, winning five Premier League titles and one Champions League.

He left for Juventus in 2014 and later turned out for Marseille and West Ham before hanging up his boots.

Evra and Ferguson maintain a good relationship to this day and have reunited in the stands at United games.

I Woke Up In Hospital After Gruesome Injury… And Phone Call From Sir Alex Ferguson Speaks Volumes About The Man He Is

A FORMER Manchester United ace opened up about an incredible gesture Sir Alex Ferguson made at a dark time when he thought his career was over.

Ferguson, 83, is considered by many as the greatest manager of all time having won 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups and two Champions League trophies during his 17-year reign at Old Trafford.

Sir Alex also gets credit for turning some of United's greatest young prospects into legends, including David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and the famed Class of 92.

One of Man Utd's lesser-known academy graduates who got an opportunity to shine under Fergie is Philip Mulryne.

Mulryne, 47, joined the Red Devils' academy at the age of 14 and made his senior debut under the Scottish great on the final day of the 1997-98 campaign.

The former midfielder, though, never managed to earn a permanent spot in the first team and that led to a mere five appearances until his move to Norwich a year later.

But a year after joining the Canaries, the ex-Northern Ireland international suffered a devastating leg break which put his career at serious risk.

As he was lying on a hospital bed agonising about his future, the phone rang, and it was Ferguson reaching out to him and offering him the opportunity to rehabilitate at Old Trafford.

The footballer - who has since become a priest - returned to Old Trafford for a celebration of the club's academy and shared his incredible story to an audience of current United hopefuls.

Mulryne said: "I just want to say, as a testament to the club and what he [Ferguson] did, first of all he gave me my debut.

"But a year after I signed for Norwich, I broke my leg. It nearly ended my career.

"I woke up in hospital that night and the first phone call I got was the gaffer, offering that I could come back to the club for all my rehabilitation, and I had left the club a year.

"That was unbelievable for me and that was testament to the personal element to the club, not just the on-the-field, off-the-field attention to the person.

"That's a wonderful testament to the club and the people in it."

'He Battered Me' – Wayne Rooney Reveals Worst Ever Rollicking From Sir Alex Ferguson And Man Utd Legend Snapped Back

WAYNE Rooney has revealed one of the worst hairdryer treatments he ever received from Sir Alex Ferguson.

Rooney, 39, was signed by the legendary Manchester United boss in 2004 and became the club's all-time record scorer with 253 goals in 559 appearances.

Wayne Rooney says, "I got it a lot, yeah."

However, the two Man Utd heroes butted heads a few times and one of their biggest confrontations took place during the 2009-10 season at Portsmouth.

The Red Devils visited Fratton Park 16 years ago in the Premier League and endured a mediocre first half that saw Rooney's opener getting cancelled out by Kevin-Prince Boateng's penalty.

Sir Alex wasn't happy at all and was especially disappointed with his star striker.

And so Fergie "battered" his player during his half-time team talk in the dressing room.

Rooney, though, strongly believed this dressing down wasn't deserved and hit back at his manager.

Upon reflection, the England legend admits he went " a bit too far" and was disrespectful.

That led to a quick one-on-one chat between the two where Rooney was reminded of who rules the roost.

The former centre-forward, though, insists that interaction had a positive effect on him as he went on to complete a hat-trick in the second half before Ryan Giggs made it 4-1.

It was obvious the two patched things up during the bus ride home as Ferguson confirmed all was forgotten.

Rooney told the BBC: "I got it a lot, yeah. When he went of course he was scary and intimidating.

"At times deserved, at times not deserved. But I think he knew the right times to do it and he knew the effect it would have. Which normally for me was a positive effect on the pitch.

"There was a game which always sticks out. It was Portsmouth away, we were winning 1-0.

"I scored in the first half and he came in and he battered me. He just went at me and I felt it wasn't deserved.

"And I went back at him and probably went back a bit too far. It was a bit disrespectful.

"And he spoke to me after that. And made it clear that I can't speak to him like that.

"And then I went out and scored another two. So I scored a hat-trick in the game.

"It was always after the game, it was on the bus. This is where he was always brilliant.

"He'd be sat on the bus and he'd walk past you and get a tea or a coffee.

"And he walks back past you, he'd give you a little slap on the head and that was his way of saying it's forgot about.

"So you were half waiting for it. I think you would be more worried if it didn't come.

"It was necessary as well at times. I think sometimes it gets blown a bit out of propotion.

"Because he was really light-hearted as well. But when he went of course he was scary and intimidating."
