Fifa Club World Cup 2025: Dates, Teams, Prize Money And Where To Watch

The draw for the expanded Fifa Club World Cup took place in Miami in December – 24 hours after a $1 billion (£787 million) broadcast deal was announced with DAZN.

An annual seven-team format is being replaced by a 32-team contest every four years. The two British clubs involved – Chelsea and Manchester City – ought to be confident of progressing to the knockout stages.

Dates: When is the 2025 Club World Cup?

The 2025 tournament will run from June 15 to July 13.

Where is the tournament being held?

It is being held in the US. Twelve venues will be used across the country, with the final to be staged at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The other venues are Mercedes-Benz Stadium (Atlanta), TQL Stadium (Cincinnati), Bank of America Stadium (Charlotte), Rose Bowl Stadium (Pasadena), Hard Rock Stadium (Miami), GEODIS Park (Nashville), Camping World Stadium (Orlando), Inter&Co Stadium (Orlando), Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia), Lumen Field (Seattle) and Audi Field (Washington).

Teams and groups

The draw was made on December 5, in a ceremony held in Miami. Manchester City, the defending champions, will play against Morocco's Wydad, Al Ain of the UAE and Juventus from Serie A. Chelsea have got Esperance Sportive de Tunisie and Flamengo of Brazil. Club Leon of Mexico were due to be in the same group as Chelsea but have been removed as they failed to meet criteria on multi-club ownership. "Fifa has determined that Club Leon will be removed from the competition, with the club to be admitted as a replacement to be announced in due course," Fifa said in a statement.

Group A: Palmeiras, FC Porto, Al Ahly, Inter Miami

Group B: Paris St-Germain, Atletico Madrid, Botafogo, Seattle Sounders

Group C: Bayern Munich, Auckland City, Boca Juniors, Benfica

Group D: Flamengo, Esperance Sportive de Tunisie, Chelsea, TBC

Group E: River Plate, Urawa Red Diamonds, Monterrey, Inter Milan

Group F: Fluminense, Borussia Dortmund, Ulsan, Mamelodi Sundowns

Group G: Manchester City, Wydad, Al Ain, Juventus

Group H: Real Madrid, Al Hilal, Pachuca, Salzburg

What is the format?

The competition shares the same format as the men's and women's World Cup competitions. The 32 teams are divided into eight groups of four, who will play each other in a single round-robin format. The top two teams from each group will then go through to the knockout stages. The final will take place on July 13, but unlike the World Cups, there will be no third-place play-off.

Prize money

Manchester City or Chelsea could claim almost £100 million in prize money if they win this summer's Club World Cup.

Tournament organiser has Fifa released more details of how the $1 billion (£774.6m) of prize money on offer to competing clubs will be split.

Football's global governing body confirmed the winners of the new 32-team event will take home up to $125m, equivalent to £96.8m at current exchange rates.

Teams will share $525 million (£406.7m) in participation fees, but this pot will not be distributed evenly.

The appearance fees going to Europe's 12 clubs will be on a sliding scale from $38.19 million (£29.6m) at the top end to $12.81 million (£9.9m) at the bottom, determined by a ranking based on "sporting and commercial criteria".

Why are Chelsea in the Club World Cup?

The tournament features clubs from each of the six international confederations and there were 12 places available for European clubs, decided by Champions League performances over the past four seasons. As a result, recent European Cup winners Chelsea (2021) and Manchester City (2023) qualified. Only two clubs per country can qualify, meaning 2022 Champions League finalists Liverpool were not included. One spot in the tournament was reserved for a team from the host nation, which enabled Fifa to shoehorn Lionel Messi's Inter Miami into the draw.

Is the tournament controversial?

In short, yes.

The involvement of 32 teams has added even more games and, in the process, cut rest time for the world's top players. This has attracted criticism and led to the threat of strike action by some players. In June, Fifpro, the global footballers' union, took legal action against Fifa over player burnout at the expanded Club World Cup. There is also the issue that a lot of players' contracts will run out in the middle of the tournament.

How can I watch the tournament?

In December, Fifa and DAZN announced a $1 billion free-to-air broadcast rights deal for the new competition.

"The agreement to hold the exclusive global broadcast rights to the Fifa Club World Cup 2025 marks the start of a broader partnership between DAZN and Fifa. This includes integrating Fifa+, Fifa's library of iconic football moments and full-match replays, as well as live fixtures, into the DAZN platform."

What else does DAZN show?

There has been much talk behind the scenes that Saudi Arabia is propping up DAZN with investment for its rights deal with Fifa. Connections with the kingdom have steadily grown in recent years. The streaming service became the first major rights partner for the Saudi Pro League and it has also established itself as one of the biggest powerbrokers in boxing, having initially agreed a deal with Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Sport in 2018.

The first event takes place in Estoril, Portugal, with more to be held in the US, Mexico, Asia, Europe, and beyond. It is backed by co-owner of the NWSL club Gotham FC and WSL's Chelsea FC, Jennifer Mackesy.

DAZN Offers Ligue 1 Season Pass To French Customers Who Buy A €14.15 McDonald's Meal

Broadcaster DAZN is offering customers in France a three-month subscription to watch Ligue 1 matches if they buy a McDonald's meal.

The first 120,000 customers that order meals from the special Ligue 1 menu on McDo+ — France's McDonald's delivery app — will be sent an access code that will allow them to watch Ligue 1 matches for the rest of the season. Customers have until April 30 to obtain their subscription.

The deal costs €14.15 (£11.87; $15.39), while a monthly DAZN subscription is €39.99 and a yearly subscription is €29.99 per month. Fans also have the option to watch one Ligue 1 match per matchday for €14.99, with the price dropping to €10 for those under 26.

This is the latest development in what has been an up-and-down first six months of the four-year deal between DAZN and the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), France's football governing body. Media reports in France previously said that the Ligue 1 deal has seen DAZN only draw in 400,000 subscribers, far less than its target of 1.5 million for the inaugural season of the deal.

The LFP has been involved in a crisis over Ligue 1's broadcast rights over the past couple of years. It was forced to scrap an auction, which sought to bring in €1billion, over the rights in October 2023 as no takers met the asking price.

Heading into the 2024-25 season, there was no deal in place for Ligue 1 to be broadcast anywhere, before an agreement between DAZN and the LFP was officially announced in August. The deal sees DAZN pay €400million per year for the French rights to eight of the nine Ligue 1 fixtures each weekend. The remaining fixture is broadcast by Qatar's beIN, who agreed to pay the LFP €100m a year.

These deals are more than 10 per cent down on the amount Amazon Prime and Canal+ paid for the rights over the previous three seasons.

In February, DAZN only sent half of January's €70m instalment to LFP, with the remaining amount going into an escrow account. The streaming service claimed that the league had not done enough to help tackle digital piracy in France, and that some clubs have not helped DAZN shoulder content for its Ligue 1 platform or with efforts to promote its service.

In response, the LFP announced its intention to take legal action and said that it planned "to firmly defend the interest of French professional clubs" as French football returned to the brink of crisis once again.

On February 28, the LFP confirmed that the two sides had reached a settlement and that DAZN had paid the remainder of the January amount. It also confirmed that both parties were engaged in discussions on the difficulties that been encountered in the early stages of the agreement.

DAZN holds a break clause that enables it to walk away from the deal at the end of this season if subscriber targets are not met.
