5 Questions With Waunakee Football's Aiden Meinholz

Aiden Meinholz was a natural fit as a kicker after playing both soccer and football while growing up.

The Waunakee senior ultimately dropped the round ball and focused solely on football. It's benefitted not only Meinholz, who graded out as a 4-star kicker by Kohl's Professional Camps, but the Warriors as well, beyond kickoffs and field goals.

Meinholz, who is considering playing at the next level, has become a standout defensive back in the Warriors secondary on top of his kicking duties.

"It's nice, but trying at times," said Meinholz, who feels he contributes more by pulling double duty.

The 5 foot 8, 153 pounder was a perfect 19 of 19 on extra points last season, according to WisSports.Net, and has helped Waunakee to a 2-1 record through three games this season.

5 Madison High School Football Stars From Week 3

The State Journal will recognize the accomplishments of five football athletes from our coverage area each week.

The efforts may not be the greatest statistically but are notable. We then invite readers to vote for the Supernova, the performance that most stood out to you.

Here are this week's honorees.

Persistent Sully Scadden helps lead Waunakee

Scadden

SEAN DAVIS LEE SPORTS WISCONSIN

Waunakee entered Badger Large Conference play last week in need of a lift.

The Warriors had suffered their first nonconference regular-season loss in more than a decade, and back-to-back losses weren't up for debate heading into a road test at Monona Grove.

"I think it was kind of an ego check, but we got to be fighting every single week," Waunakee running back Sully Scadden said. "It's not just going to be given to us; we have to go out there and take it."

That's exactly what he did, persisting against a stout Silver Eagles defense to help lead the way to a 42-21 win. Scadden rushed for a pair of touchdowns, including the final score of the game, as the Warriors (2-1, 1-0 Badger Large) rebounded from a 49-34 loss to Madison Memorial in Week 2.

The 5-foot-7, 163-pound senior fought for 59 yards on 18 carries, eventually breaking loose to help put away the Silver Eagles. Following a recovered onside kick after Monona Grove whittled a 27-point lead to 34-21 late in the fourth quarter, Scadden ripped off a game-long 26-yard run to set up a 4-yard score with 4 minutes, 19 seconds left to play.

Scadden also paved the way for his teammates. He helped give Waunakee the lead, laying a massive block to spring loose Mac Johnson on a go-ahead 53-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter.

"I don't get to do that very often, but I've got to do whatever I can, however I can do it," Scadden said.

Drew Viney spreads wealth in Stoughton win

Stoughton's passing game has been hitting on all cylinders, even with some new weapons taking over, so far this season.

The Vikings and quarterback Drew Viney nearly were perfect in a convincing 40-21 win over Kettle Moraine Lutheran in the first week of Badger Small/East Central crossover games.

The senior right-hander completed 21 of 25 passes for a career-high 401 yards and five touchdowns, good for a perfect 158.3 passer rating, according to WisSports.Net.

Viney threw three first-half touchdown passes, including a pair to Jay Johnson and another to LeShawn Brown, as the Vikings led 26-0 at the break. He connected with Brown and Johnson on touchdown catches of 38 and 36 yards in the third quarter to cap the Vikings' scoring.

"I think what impressed me most was his ability to keep his eyes down the field and trust his receivers to make plays," Stoughton coach Jason Becker said.

Viney shared the wealth beyond his top two options, connecting with five other receivers, including four others at least twice.

"That shows the confidence Drew has in all of his teammates to make plays, rather than to one or two guys," Becker said.

McFarland's Garrett Crull nearly perfect in first win

McFarland burst into the win column to open Rock Valley Conference play with a 35-6 win over Whitewater after a pair of nonconference losses.

The Spartans rode the arm of quarterback Garrett Crull past the Whippets as the 6-3, 160-pound sophomore was precise throughout his third start. Crull completed 13 of 17 passes for 223 yards and three scores, according to WisSports, to fuel the Spartans.

"The offensive line gave him some time to be able to make his progressions and hit the open receiver," McFarland coach Paul Ackley said. "He moved out of the pocket well and threw good balls on the run."

He connected with seven receivers but found the most success with Brady Krenz. The pair connected for two scores, including a 19-yard jump ball and a 90-yard catch and run.

Lawson Maier sparks Sauk Prairie on ground

Maier

NILE MCNAIR, LEE SPORTS WISCONSIN

Sauk Prairie, which touts one of the area's top quarterback-wide receiver duos, relied on a change of pace in Week 3.

Lawson Maier provided the perfect second option for the Eagles, fueling a strong ground attack in a 44-0 win over Watertown in a Badger Small/East Central crossover. The senior ran for 171 yards and a pair of scores on 24 carries, averaging 7.1 yards per carry, according to WisSports.

"Lawson's a shifty running back with great field vision who waited patiently, taking advantage of the running lanes when they appeared," Sauk Prairie coach Randy Wallace said.

Maier, who also had three tackles on defense, helped set the tone early with a 23-yard score in the opening quarter.

Cade Patterson carries heavy load for Madison Edgewood

Patterson

SEAN DAVIS LEE SPORTS WISCONSIN

Finishing runs was a point of emphasis Madison Edgewood coach Jesse Norris gave Cade Patterson entering Week 3 action.

The senior running back took it to heart, finding the end zone four times in the Crusaders' 47-18 win over Kewaskum in a Badger Small/East Central crossover game.

"Cade is settling nicely into his role, and I'm very proud of his progress," Norris said.

Patterson recorded just 57 yards but logged a team-high 15 carries, providing a great 1-2 punch alongside Jack Halloran. He scored the game's opening touchdown from 6 yards out and added a 3-yard score after the Indians pulled within 14-12 early in the second quarter.

Patterson helped put the game out of reach with Edgewood's final two scores from 7 yards and 1 yard out in the third quarter for a 47-12 lead and a running clock.

Vote For The Week 5 High School Football Game We Should Cover

The conference season is in the thick of things and teams already have an idea of what they should look like as the regular season inches closer to the playoffs.

We asked readers to cast their vote for which Week 5 high school football game our WiscNews sports team should cover. The poll will close at 4 p.M. Thursday.

Madison Edgewood at Portage, 7 p.M. Friday

Portage's Max Kreuziger tackles Wisconsin Dell's Sam Ersland for a short gain during the second half of Friday's nonconference game. Kreuziger finished with eight total tackles and an interception for a touchdown.

MARK MCMULEN LEE SPORTS WISCONSIN

Portage (2-2, 0-2 Badger Small) is coming off back-to-back allowing opponents to score more than 25 points.

The defense has to get back on track. Against Edgewood (2-2, 1-1), the defense will have its hands full with senior running back Cade Patterson, who has run for team-highs of 247 yards and four touchdowns.

The Crusaders could only muster a handful of points in a 33-20 loss to Kettle Moraine Lutheran last week. Meanwhile, Gannon Bagstad threw for two touchdowns last week to keep the Crusaders alive.

Oshkosh Lourdes at Cambria-Friesland, 7 p.M. Friday

Cambria-Friesland's Carter Drews sidesteps Fall River/Rio's Gabe Locke while attempting a pass during Friday night's Trailways Conference game at Pirate Cover Stadium in Fall River.

SEAN DAVIS, LEE SPORTS WISCONSIN

Cambria-Friesland (2-2, 1-1 Trailways) is coming off a tough 22-0 Trailways Conference loss to Randolph. Dayton McBride only threw for 88 yards and an interception while the rushing attack musted just 155 yards.

Not much production meant for a shutout. This week, the Hilltoppers' defense will have to contend with Oshkosh Lourdes quarterback Wade Lindahl, who has thrown for 750 yards and six touchdowns so far this season.

Lourdes (1-3, 0-2) lost 41-30 to Johnson Creek last week, but Lindahl had 303 passing yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 69 yards.

Adams-Friendship at Waupun, 7 p.M. Friday

Waupun's Landon Potratz enters this season as the Plug on defense, a hybrid position between a linebacker and defensive end.

MARK MCMULEN, LEE SPORTS WISCONSIN

Waupun is flying high from a 34-14 South Central Conference victory over Ripon last week.

Quarterback Chase Beahm threw for 115 yards and two touchdowns while running back Kyler Sanders led the way with 60 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

The Waupun defense (3-1, 1-1 South Central) also intercepted Ripon four times. One of the interceptions came from Haiden Rieder, who also had 11 total tackles on the night.

The confidence gained bodes well when Adams-Friendship (2-2, 1-1) comes to town. Adam's Friendship lost 55-7 to Wisconsin Dells. Wisconsin Dells gave Waupun it's only defeat of the season, a 44-20 loss on Sept. 6.
